SketchUp is an elegant tool for quickly designing buildings.
I have used it for assessing the efficiency of a Photo-Voltaic-Power-Plant installed on a roof. After having the object placed and aligned with its geo coordinates I could show the effects of the PV modules being covered by shadows. This was done for the course of a day and also throughout the year with the sun being correctly placed with azimuth and altitude dependant upon date and time. A fantastic feature.
Furthermore I am using SketchUp for planning offices with their furniture and thus being able to decide whether the room would be appropriate.
The exact design of a complex building with all floors, rooms, and roof is not so easy to be done using SketchUp due to the fact that the tool is based on surface models. Here a software based on volume models would be the primary choice. I also have failed to generate STL-files for 3d printing suffering from the fact that often enough the surface sections are not properly closed and aligned.
Dependant of the specific application SketchUp remains to be a very interesting tool which I will keep using.
